• The murder trial of Brad Simpson, originally scheduled for next month, has been delayed as prosecutors continue reviewing newly submitted evidence.

  • During a court hearing on Tuesday, lead prosecutor Casey Sandoval told the court that law enforcement was required to submit all evidence by September 1, 2025—but additional materials have continued to arrive in what she described as “waves of more evidence.”

  • Sandoval stated that the volume of new evidence made it impossible for the state to complete its review in time for the previously scheduled February trial date.

  • Jury selection had been set to begin on February 13.

  • Simpson, 55, is charged with murder in connection with the disappearance and presumed death of his wife, Suzanne Simpson, a mother of four who was last seen alive on October 6, 2024.

  • In addition to the murder charge, Simpson also faces:

    • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury

    • Tampering with a corpse

    • Possession of a prohibited weapon

    • A federal felony charge for possession of an unregistered firearm

  • State District Judge Joel Perez granted a 60-day reset in the case, though no new trial date has yet been scheduled.

  • Prosecutors have also requested a pretrial hearing to determine whether statements allegedly made by Suzanne Simpson can be admitted as evidence.

    • The defense has opposed this request.

    • Judge Perez will decide whether the hearing is necessary after the defense submits a written response.

  • Defense attorney Steven Gilmore told the court he is seeking personnel files for three law enforcement officers involved in the investigation.

  • Those records include files related to Fidel Villegas, the Olmos Park police chief.

  • Suzanne Simpson was last seen outside her home in the 500 block of East Olmos Drive.

    • A neighbor reported witnessing a physical altercation between Suzanne and Brad Simpson.

    • That same neighbor later told investigators they heard screams coming from a wooded area near the home and heard Brad Simpson leave the area in his truck.

  • Despite extensive searches, law enforcement has not been able to locate Suzanne Simpson’s body.
